Ford supplies the cab, frame, drivetrain and exposed rear chassis. A compatible commercial body is then installed based on the work the finished truck needs to perform.

That makes the F-550 particularly useful when the commercial body itself is heavy or when the truck needs to carry substantial tools, equipment and operating payload.

The F-550 is commonly considered for applications where an F-350 or F-450 may not provide enough completed-vehicle capacity, but the business does not yet need to move into a larger medium-duty truck.
